Brooklyn Townhouse
Brooklyn, NY
The design concept of this historic townhouse is to extend the garden into the living space while maintaining the façade of the rear garden wall. This is accomplished by cantilevering a two-story addition into the garden while carving a double-height space into the core of the building. Above this extended garden space floats the glass kitchen, which is stepped in order to integrate two mature London plane trees. This new space inhabits the zone between interior and exterior and is reached from the parlor floor by a bridge leading through the exposed brick of the rear façade.
Working as both architect and builder allowed us to capture the spirit of the original structure while fine tuning our modern intervention in real time. Constant presence on site enabled us to precisely modify the existing structure and space to capture daylight and better integrate the rear garden into the experience of the house.
Brooklyn Townhouse was a finalist in the City House category for the NYCxDESIGN Awards.
