HSC Ground Up Design/Build Program

Lower East Side, NY

LSS and Hester Street Collaborative worked with students from MS 131 and PS 134 on the Lower East Side to create sculptural gardens that foster connections between academic and art classes, and architecture, urban design, and community service.  These design/build projects allow the students to conceive, design and fabricate new public spaces.  By giving students a hand and a voice in how their spaces are made, the HSC’s Ground Up program empowers students to improve their immediate environment while affording them the opportunity for deeper participation in larger neighborhood design initiatives.
