Oceanside Retreat

East Hampton, NY

This coastal home was conceived as a stone volume rising out of the dunes, carved and eroded to create a series of outdoor and indoor spaces that vary from grand to intimate in order to provide opportunities for showcasing a contemporary art collection, formal and informal entertaining, and more private family life at different scales appropriate to their use, all organized around views of the breathtaking landscape.

Nestled on a small, ecologically sensitive site on the edge of a nature preserve, between a tidal pond and a coastal dune, the building captures and elevates the outdoor spaces within its massing in order to maximize views and minimize disruption of the coastal ecology.

Additionally, it utilizes a number of sustainable technologies including deep overhangs with louvered sun control, vegetated roofs, photovoltaic arrays and a closed loop geothermal system to maximize its energy efficiency while enhancing, rather than compromising the quality of the spaces.
